How Does An RTO Work? A Complete Guide To Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers

Jun 23, 2026 Leave a message

What Is an RTO?

RTO stands for Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer.

It is an air pollution control system designed to destroy VOCs and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) by oxidizing them at high temperatures.

The process converts harmful organic compounds into

Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)

Water Vapor (H₂O)

The purified air is then safely released into the atmosphere.

Main Components of an RTO System

1. Feed Inlet

Industrial exhaust gases containing VOCs enter the RTO through the inlet duct.

2. Regenerator Ceramic Beds

The ceramic media store thermal energy from previous operating cycles.

These ceramic beds are responsible for achieving thermal recovery efficiencies of up to 95%.

3. Combustion Chamber

The combustion chamber is the heart of the RTO system.

Here, VOCs are heated to approximately 800–850°C and oxidized into harmless substances.

4. Burner System

The burner provides supplemental heat when necessary to maintain operating temperature.

5. Reversing Valve

The reversing valve automatically changes airflow direction during operation.

This allows continuous heat recovery and stable performance.

6. Purge Valve

The purge valve removes residual VOCs before switching cycles.

This improves destruction efficiency and prevents untreated gases from escaping.

Step-by-Step Working Process

Step 1

Polluted exhaust gas enters the ceramic bed and is preheated by stored thermal energy.

Step 2

The preheated gas flows into the combustion chamber.

Step 3

At temperatures of approximately 800–850°C, VOC molecules are oxidized into CO₂ and H₂O.

Step 4

The purified hot gas passes through another ceramic bed, transferring heat for future cycles.

Step 5

Clean air is discharged through the outlet stack.

Why Is RTO So Energy Efficient?

The key advantage of an RTO system is its regenerative heat recovery design.

By recycling thermal energy, fuel consumption is dramatically reduced.

Typical thermal efficiency:

✔ 90–95%

VOC destruction efficiency:

✔ Up to 99%
